इतिहास बताता है की इस द्वीप पर सबसे पहले मार्को पोलो नाम का प्रवासी आया था। इस द्वीप पर 18 वी शताब्दी में मराठा शासक कान्होजी आंग्रे भी एक समय में शासन किया करते थे। लेकिन एक युद्ध में उन्हें अंग्रेज और पोर्तुगिजो की नौदल सेना ने साथ में मिलकर हरा दिया था और उसके साथ ही उनका शासन भी ख़तम हो गया।
